March has mostly been defined by grey skies and rain. Lots of it. I celebrated turning 26, I travelled to Lisbon and I’ve started a letter exchange with Substack writer
(Letters to be published live shortly).10 things of interest
There are two things that Lisbon is known for: Tinned fish and Pastel de Nata. When I came back, I brought back six tins of sardines for my dad - each a different flavour. Needless to say he devoured all six tins, living off a diet for sourdough and sardines for a week. On a stroll through Borough Market in London, I found the Tinned Fish Market, which sells a roundup of the finest tinned fish, prepared and packed in the best olive oils and sauces. Plus they do delivery.
Summer Water by Sarah Moss. A great, punchy short read. Probably an 8/10. The ending flops for me personally, turning the topic into something rather boringly political.
- always offers insightful advice and this piece on friendships is one I keep thinking about. Read the full post here.
- writes about the Mother-Writer concept, which I find fascinating. Olivia Campbell from Literary Hub dives into the ingenuity of the Mother-Writer and what it takes to be a writer and a parent at the same time.
This salmon recipe which I genuinely think everybody should try.
- from wrote a piece on canelé, which is a Bordelaise pastry that is baked in beeswax coated copper tins - sounds complicated, I agree. But, I’m dying to make some.
Fun Fact: Cockroaches have evolved so that some are born with an unusual set of genetic changes that rewired their sense of taste (full article here). This means they’re no longer attracted to sugar-baits (e.g.xyz) like previous roaches were. Fascinating and scary that we’re still stuck with those pest bastards.
Growing up, Judy Blume was one of my favourite authors and apparently her book, “Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret” is set to be a comedy/drama adaption. Variety wrote a profile piece on her and it’s lovely to read.
‘The Glory’ on Netflix. A 16-episode binge-worthy Korea drama about childhood revenge. My mum’s already watched it and she’s not a massive TV watcher.
I entered a big Youtube rabbit hole on 120-film cameras. I currently shoot on the Fuji x100V for digital and the Minolta X-300 35mm for film. This is what got me started and now I’m scouring eBay for one.
