In a new town at a time when Britain was getting our cultural cues from America and Australia. I longed to be from somewhere like London, wish vibrancy and culture.
Anyway, I really wanted to just say that I came here after reading your note about growing slowly on substack - It strikes me that is all we can do with our relationships. It's what I feel I do with my parents, we grow together. I'm a parent now and I just hope that my children want to share anything with me in order to feel closer. I'm sure your mum appreciates that.
To be truthful, I don't know many Asian-Irish people. It;s an interesting combination of cultures. I can relate to your feelings of loss; I'm 1/2 German and, although I studied it in College, I never got past the "Hi, my name is Jenean" stage. Thank God the other 1/2 of me is English, or I'd be in real trouble. I enjoyed your CNF greatly.
This is super interesting to ponder, Natalie. And yeah, not being able to speak the language of your relatives must feel pretty weird.
To me, here in Romania even when someone’s parents speak with a different regional accent from how their offspring speaks, it feels odd. I come from a very homogenous household, where both my parents and both sets of grandparents were born in the southern part of Romania, by the sea, even if not all in the same city. But this has led to me wanting to experience the rest of my country, so early this year I moved to a city 6 hours away from my hometown by car.
Exploring where you’re from is cool, but exploring where others are from is awesome too!
That’s why I love when you post such cultural explorations. I find them really fascinating!
It's so beautiful that you can trace your heritage to that side of Romania. I love that you've decided to explore more of the country; it's incredibly freeing and you learn so much. It's amazing how much within a single country, how many different varying cultures there can be.
Hi Charles, I'm so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I can't imagine the weight of that feeling on you. To the angry haters online? Block them. You deserve more than that negative energy right now and those people aren't worth your time if they're spewing hatred at you online. Keyboard warriors are all they are. You can also turn off comments, especially to protect your mental health. Nobody will judge you for it. You deserve that peace. I'm sorry it's taken me a few days to reply to your message, thank you for sharing it with me, I feel for you and am sending you some digital positivity to get you through. I hope you have that bowl of Pho, have it every day if you need to.

Thank you, Madilyn 🫶🏼
I grew up feeling like I was without a culture.

Noodle soup or wonton soup are my go-to dishes when I'm having a crappy day. It always makes me feel just a little bit better afterwards.
